What Does It Cost to Launch a Watch Brand?

Reviewed by Rajan MehtaLast reviewed 14 July 2026

A responsible launch budget cannot be reduced to one cost per watch. The product is only one part of the investment; development, packaging, logistics, channel economics and after-sales all matter.

Separate development cost from unit cost

Sampling, artwork, engineering and tooling are project costs. Movements, cases, dials, straps, packaging and assembly contribute to unit cost. Keeping them separate makes it easier to compare a private-label route with a deeper OEM programme.

A quotation should identify assumptions and one-time items rather than hiding everything inside a single unit figure.

Product specification drives the commercial model

Movement, case material, crystal, dial construction, finishing, strap or bracelet, water-resistance requirement and inspection scope all influence cost. Small visual changes can also introduce new supplier minimums or tooling.

Prioritise the two or three details that define the brand and simplify features the customer is unlikely to value.

Packaging and logistics deserve their own budget

Rigid boxes, inserts, sleeves, manuals and warranty cards have separate development and supplier requirements. Packaging dimensions also affect storage and freight.

Include inbound freight, duties where applicable, domestic fulfilment, samples, damaged-unit allowance and launch photography when evaluating the total cash required.

Model margin by channel

A direct sale, marketplace sale, distributor order and retail placement have different fees, discounts, returns and working-capital needs. Work backwards from a realistic net receipt—not the headline retail price.

The financially safer launch is often a focused assortment with a clear replenishment route rather than a wide collection that consumes cash before demand is known.

Frequently asked questions

Why do manufacturers avoid publishing one launch price?+

Because movement, materials, customization, quantity, packaging, inspection, logistics and sales channel change the total investment.

Is private label always cheaper than OEM?+

It usually reduces engineering and tooling, but the final commercial result still depends on the chosen product, branding, packaging and quantity.

What should a launch budget include beyond inventory?+

Include development, samples, packaging, freight, duties, testing where required, warranty planning, content, fulfilment and channel costs.
